Nature's Virus Killers by Mark Stengler, Whether you're up against cold, flu, hepatitis, Epstein-Barr, herpes, or a platoon of other viruses, Dr. Stengler provides specific life-saving strategies to effectively "kill" these body invaders.
Herpes zoster - Herpes zoster, colloquially known as shingles, is the reactivation of varicella zoster virus, leading to a crop of painful blisters over the area of a dermatome. It occurs very rarely in children and adults, but its incidence is high in the elderly (over 60), as well as in any age group of immunocompromised patients. Varicella zoster virus - The varicella-zoster virus (VZV), also known as human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3), is one of the eight herpesviruses known to affect humans (and other vertebrates). Primary VZV infection results in chickenpox (varicella), which may rarely result in complications including VZV encephalitis. Postherpetic neuralgia - Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a painful condition caused by the varicella zoster virus in a dermatomal distribution (the area governed by a particular sensory nerve) after an attack of herpes zoster (HZ) (commonly known as shingles), usually manifesting after the vesicles have crusted over and begun to heal. Because it is fundamentally a (neuropathic) nerve pain, it is not controlled by traditional analgesics such as opiates and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Herpes virus - In colloquial use, herpes virus refers to the herpes simplex virus, particularly when transmitted sexually. In scientific use, herpesvirus (without the space) refers to a virus of the taxonomic family herpesviridae.
